Bristol Palin: The Canary in The Coal Mine

Its been awhile since my last post– too long. Since then, a lot has happened.

Sarah Palin is John McCain’s running mate; she’s awesome, and as I’ve mentioned in the past, a true conservative. Now, there is this whole controversy with Bristol Palin, her daughter. Almost immediately after McCain announced Palin as his choice, the left wing blogs went crazy with wild speculation as to whether her youngest son, Trig, was not her’s, but in fact Bristol’s– even going so far as to conjecture that pictures of the Alaskan governor when she was pregnant were faked, and to openly consider the possibility that she had been wearing a “pregnancy suit.”

In order to rebut such ridiculous claims, Palin confirmed that it would be impossible for Bristol to have given birth to Trig, since at the time of Trig’s birth, Bristol herself had been pregnant. Unsurprisingly, this has started yet another controversy.

Teenage pregnancy creates a difficult situation for everyone involved. Over the past few days, this poor girl has been dragged through the mud on national television. Now, as someone who is Bristol Palin’s age, I know many girls who have had pregnancy scares; it must be a frightening thing to experience– I can only imagine. But the liberal media is treating this poor girl like a pariah, shamelessly using her to attack her mother.

“If she can’t run her own daughter, how can we expect her to run the country?!”

Is this offensive to anyone else? The implication here is that at seventeen years old, Bristol Palin is wholly incapable of making decisions for herself. Our parents do their best to teach us, to nurture us, and to give us guidance and instruction– that we might be the very best people we can; but at the end of the day, they cannot decide for us. We make our own decisions– sometimes we make good ones, sometimes not.

It would have been easy for Bristol Palin to quietly get an abortion, saving herself the unforgiving scrutiny of the liberal media that she now faces– but she chose life. Liberals talk about pro-choice, pro-choice, as though, for them, the abortion issue is about the choice– but it seems that when a young woman, faced with a difficult decision, chooses life, they can do nothing but pile on the criticism. If things had gone differently, would we not be hearing from the lib media how brave young Bristol is, to make such a difficult decision so boldly, in defiance of her mother?

You see, liberals in this country pretend to be advocates of women and minorities, but when these groups do not live up to the neat little caricatures that liberals draw, they get angry. If anyone doubts me on this, I offer you Clarence Thomas as the stalwart example. And now their doing it to Sarah Palin– oh she’s pro-life! There are no pro-life women in this country! Only misogynistic men are capable of a pro-life stance. Oh! She uses guns! She hunts! She fishes! A woman with a gun? Oh! Not in my vision of America!

Do you see the ultimate sexism that is feminism?

This kind of behavior by the media– the clear bias, has been going on for decades. This is a media that went easy on Kennedy; this is the media that has given Bill Clinton multiple passes; a media that was far too easy on the Soviet Union; this is a media that, as far as I’m concerned, has aided our enemy, by pressuring our military to go easy on them– both on the streets of Baghdad and Fallujah and in Guantanamo Bay.

BUT, when a family member of the Republican vice presidential candidate is going through a crisis– no one gets a pass!

Hey Bill! I agree attacking a 17 year old to make her mother look bad in the press is beyond stupid! It is so funny when I heard she was McCain’s VP, I thought about u guys and all your crazy antics about her this summer.

  2. Given 1. Palin’s unconditional support for abstience-only sex-ed - which have been shown over and over to fail in preventing teen pregnancy and STDs - and 2. the safe assumption that Bristol was subject to such education, media coverage pointing the connection is totally legitimate. Furthermore, what’s with Bristol and her - as Drudge says - “babydaddy” now getting married?! Given the background of the latter (f—ing redneck”, “don’t want kids”), this is not a good idea and clearly something being pushed on Bristol from her parents, thus potentially turning one bad decision (unsafe sex) into three ruined lives.

Bill, great post! I expect that, if anything this controversy will help Palin, though this is definitely a shotgun wedding and abstinence only sex ed is a stupid position to take.

I completely agree with you that the media coverage would be twisted the other way if she was having an abortion, and that this shows that the abortion debate is about abortion rather than choice, but I think I agree with NickyCheese on the marriage issue. It would be a mistake to marry this guy, he seems too immature.

I is ridiculous that the media is using Bristol as ammunition. Not only is it low (way low), but it’s too easy. It’s too easy to discredit Palin for her daughter’s mistake. Everyone already thinks it. You don’t need to shove it in the faces of everyone, CNN.

Totally feeling Nicky Cheese on this one. Irony seems to love the conservative Palin family.

My only question is what kind of mother puts her daughter’s face one every tabloid in America? That’s exactly what Palin did when she accepted the nomination.

  7. The attacks on Palin won’t stop. They’ll do anything (including breaking the law) to tear her down. Are the Dems doing so poorly with voters that they have to resort to this?

The media scrutiny of Palin was inevitable. Any politician who has less than two years of experience in state government, no national or foreign policy experience will face criticism. Democrat or Republican. Particularly when it appears to her opponents she was chosen solely to draw votes from a particular demographic.

Now, as for the media’s spotlight on her personal life… maybe politicians with the background and personal life Palin has should think twice (man OR woman) before accepting a nomination for the second highest position in American government. She knew her family values, etc would be questioned. How could she not? Her daughter is pregnant at 17–who was also known as “the make out queen” in her high school–and she doesn’t believe in sex education??

No. The ‘Dems’ are not doing so poorly with voters that they have to resort to anything. In my humble opinion, Palin did it to herself. And her daughter. What kind of parent is she really?

I know very little of the Palin’s and I personally take no issue with the young woman Bristol. As a woman my heart goes out to her and I pray she has all the support she needs in raising her child. I also commend her for having the courage to have her child in light of her mother’s high profile career. While there appear to be apparent contradictions between the Governor’s abstinence only stance and the condition of her daughter, it is not fair not completely call her an inadequate mother due to the choice of her teenage child. My issue is with her politics and her and her party’s inability to take their own medicine.

The same conservatives who are crying “foul” about unfair treatment of Governor Palin stood in condemnation of the Spears family and had no problem using sexist strategies against Senator Clinton. It seems the Judeo-Christian values conservatives hold dear are not necessarily the forgiveness, mercy, grace, and non judgment Christ taught or at least it only seems it is extended to other conservatives.

The sexism experienced by Governor Palin and Senator Clinton is just as appalling as the racism endured by Senator Obama. Racism administered and deeply held by a great number of conservatives. There are countless unfounded attempts by conservatives to paint Senator Obama as Muslim and a supporter of terrorism. It appears far more acceptable to accuse someone of being Muslim than to say he simply can’t be supported because of his race.

We all reap what we sow sooner or later. Conservatives and Liberals alike need to be conscious of what they dish out cause more than likely they will one day have to eat it.

I just wonder what Fox News and conservative bloggers would say if Barack had a 17-year-old pregnant daughter… Do you think Bill O’Reilly would go on the record saying it’s a personal choice and applauding her for not having an abortion?

And, I’m sorry, if Palin wants to use her military son and special needs baby as proof that she’s go what it takes, her knocked-up daughter is fair game. I don’t think personal attacks on her or the Palin family are warranted (as Rush Limbaugh’s attacks on a 12-year-old Chelsea Clinton were odious yet guffawed at by right-wingers). But she is most definitely a symbol of failed Republican policy.

People really need to get over the whole “liberal media” bullshit. Reporting facts is not showing bias. Did CNN fail to mention anything about William Ayers? Why not search for William Ayers CNN on Youtube? Does that mean they were showing a conservative bias or are conservatives just so brainwashed into believing the fallacy of liberal bias that anything short of the anchor wearing a McCain/Palin button is seen as favoring the left?

Oh, and somebody said Obama was mostly white…you try walking around with his skin color and tell people you’re white.

Funny that you should mention Clarence Thomas in your post. You are probably too young to remember Thomas’ nomination. He was nominated to replace the very highly regarded Thurgood Marshall. Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court after just 2 years as a Washington, DC Court of Appeals justice. The argument against Thomas was not that he was the “wrong kind of black” as you imply, but that there were certainly more qualified justices to fill the vacancy. President Bush merely picked a Black Conservative to take the place of Marshall just like McCain chose Sarah Palin to woo supporters of Hillary Clinton.
